I enjoyed reading about your peregrinations. My wife, baby son and I lived on a finca between Pto de Sta Maria and Rota when I was stationed at the Naval Comm Sta there in the mid-’70’s. We love Spain and I can understand your remaining there, suitably enthralled by the place. After almost 33 yrs of USN duty I retired and also as you, write books. My first book of poetry appears in about a month. Because of Spain, I tried to capture it in words, as follows:
ALHAMBRA
A mummified magnificence, the Mount
By those who taught us science – and to count,
Its tinklling fountains take us in a trance
Where jadmine scents the air and maidens danced.
The dessicated dowries dry with sun.
As verdant gardens languish there – for none
Who laid the seeds will come to prune the vines,
An artifice of ages mocks their times!
And so, in palace, shady grove or bath,
The foreign footfalls echo on the path,
Where once a noble minute held Time’s breath -
To fail and crumble in an empty death!
Far, far away, where Allah has his place,
Great tears of grief must trickle down his face….

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your note, and congratulations on your new book of poems. (Your sample, Alhambra, is a nice addition to my blog.)
Spain has changed a lot since the mid-70’s, but it’s still enthralling compared to most other places we know.
Kind regards,
Mike
